Digital Connectivity: Improve access to high-speed fixed and wireless connectivity for homes, businesses and visitors across the region.
We want to support and accelerate the delivery of robust, reliable connectivity; maximising the delivery of the underlying infrastructure to unlock the innovation potential of the region and secure the economic and social returns promised by comprehensive 5G and Full Fibre network capabilities and coverage.
North East councils have collaboratively developed a data driven regional mobile signal survey and mapping platform, combining a staff app and targeted surveys to generate shared, evidence based insight. The initiative enables councils to identify notspots, engage mobile network operators, and influence investment using consistent, locally-owned data.
We will use this alongside fixed connectivity data to create a shared, evidence-led view of digital connectivity across the region and to identify areas with poor service or delivery gaps. The outputs will support coordinated engagement with industry and government, strengthen the case for targeted investment and interventions, and help ensure residents, businesses and public services can rely on robust connectivity.
To improve connectivity the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority’s Digital Leads have identified the following goals:
- Collate accurate regional data on fixed + mobile connectivity.
- Map fixed and mobile connectivity to identify connectivity gaps and prioritise areas for intervention, taking into account any planned works
- Identify further actions required to enhance connectivity
- Identify and champion innovative and alternative forms of connectivity to make it easier and more cost effective for the connectivity market to deploy commercially.
